Integrated nutrient management of annual and perennial crops on sandy coastal plains of south central coast of Vietnam

ABSTRACT

Integrated nutrient management (INM) studies were conducted for annual and perennial crops in the south central coastal region of Vietnam (SCC VN) to use available organic sources (manure, crop residues, biochar etc) with inorganic fertilizers to optimize crop nutrition.  The results indicate that if INMpractices were adopted by farmers, yields of annual and perennial crops would increase significantly, particularly when biochar prepared from rice husk was applied to these crops. In addition, application of biochar improved nutrient and water retention capacity when peanut was grown on sandy soils. Application of organic resources (manure, biochar) in combination with inorganic fertilizers increased peanut yield significantly as a result of providing both the macro and micro-nutrients in comparison to the application of either organic or inorganic fertilizers. Therefore, higher and balanced rates of nutrients may be required to achieve optimum productivity and increased nutrient use efficiencywhen inorganic fertilizers are usedin combination with organic sourcessources.
